I believe there is a Carl Sagan quote about how people don't want to admit they have been bamboozled. IIRC, he goes on to cover changing their opinion is easier to do by bamboozling them again, rather than presenting facts.

I used to like quotes like this one but have recently changed to dislike it because it's now obvious how many people simply have given up trying to hold a civil debate because the other person is simply 'dumb for not understanding' or 'doesn't think with logic'. Seeing a climate change denier/anti-vaxxer and then writing them off as a lost cause just encourages that stance. Having a conversation with a person who doesn't argue from logic is HARD and TIRING, but it needs to be done, and it needs to be done with compassion. These debates online are 100x harder tho.
